Outdoor Sculpture Conservation

Polygons on Triangles is now on display at the Denver Botanic Gardens.

Conservators of outdoor historic (or classic) metal sculptures are often challenged with the effects of the passing years. Paint fades and peels, much of it containing lead, while steel corrodes.

An example of Yankee’s nearly 40 years of experience with aesthetic finishing was with our restoring Alexander Calder’s, “Polygons on Triangles”, pictured at right.

This structure was disassembled and delivered to Yankee’s shop for sandblasting in our 2,400 square foot, negative pressure blast booth to control fugitive lead dust emissions. The blasted and cleaned sculpture was then sprayed with an epoxy and urethane yacht finish by one of Yankee’s partners.

Yankee’s additional capabilities include erection of negative pressure containments on site to control fugitive sandblast dust, and repainting for sculptures too large to disassemble.
